For The Lovers of Banana, a Desert With Love

Banana split, the history of this famous American ice cream-based dessert made with mostly banana and scoops of flavored filled ice creams range back to the year 1904.

Super tasty and a lovable dessert globally, the Banana split is made by slicing the banana in half lengthwise (hence the name) and lay articulately in a dish. Though there are plethoras of ways these splits are crafted as per the choice of the consumer, the main procedure includes three scoops of ice cream, one each of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. The three scoops are strategically placed in between the split bananas. Then they are topped up with the creamiest sauces of chocolate, strawberry or pineapple or a combination of them all. Then they are drizzled with whipped cream and maraschino cherries, crushed nuts (mostly peanuts or walnuts) for an additional flavor that’s a hit with everyone who has a sweet tooth.

Traditionally the Banana split is served in an elongated glass dish called a “boat”. With time the dish has seen the inclusions of many variations. From using the grilled bananas to experimenting with a myriad of flavors such as coconut, coffee or sauces like that or sweetened or salted caramel and warm butterscotch. Caramel sauces are the non-traditional range of toppings that are used in the standard Banana split.

The origin

There’s no doubt that there’s no definitive or distinctive date as to when the Banana split was brought into the consumer’s table. There’s an active debate among historians regarding the actual origin of this dessert classic but most historians believe it was first curated in 1904 by David “Doc” Strickler, an optometrist in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. What inspired Strickler the most was the fruit-laden sundae which he came across while vacationing in Atlantic City in the summers of 1904. He aspired to curate something similar yet different. Back in Latrobe, he used the banana fruit as it was a luxury item as back in the day these fruits were shipped to Pennsylvania by way of New Orleans. The original Sunday concocted him, coated 10 cents which was a double of the cost of the other available sundaes. The news of this modified sundae spread from mouth to mouth and in no time, the new delicacy among the desserts spread far and wide, even beyond Latrobe.
